What do those customers who already bought JBL Flip 5 Waterproof Bluetooth Speaker have to say about this?
A Complete Review by Carlos B.
• Battery lasts up to 5 hours at 100%
• Clear, clean sound
• Partyboost mode
• IPX7 and floats
• Polyexpan housing
• Full charge in 2.5 hours
• Mono sound (has 1 driver instead of 2)
• No minijack
• Bluetooth 4.2 (expected 5.0)
• No has hands-free microphone
• Not compatible with the previous model Flip 4
• USB-C exposed, this is problematic for dust
I bought this bluetooth speaker because I already used the JBL Flip 4 and liked its sound, although after several years it ended up breaking the battery. I really wanted to find a portable wireless speaker that would work as well as the Flip 4.
Before starting to analyze the JBL Flip 5 I must say that I was disappointed, I thought they would really improve the model by renewing it, but it wasn’t. I used it for a week and a half but I returned it for several reasons. First of all it has no hands-free microphone, this is something VERY important for me because I use the speaker in the shower and if someone calls me before with the Flip 4 I could take the calls. I also don’t like that it’s not compatible with other older models, I guess they’ll fix it with a firmware update, but it gives me the feeling of being an unfinished product.
Oh! Oh! The sound is mono instead of stereo as it was before on Flip 4. This has also happened with the JBL Charge 4 and I personally do not dislike it because the sound acquires more detail in treble, whereas previously details were lost at high frequencies.
Below I show my opinion on each of the points in more detail.
Externally, if we compare it with the previous model, the JBL Flip 5 stands out for having a larger size and presents some aesthetic improvement that gives it a more modern look, although the cylindrical shape is almost identical.
Measures 18.1cm in length and 6.9cm in diameter. Weighs 540 grams so it is still easy to carry as it has a system to hang a rope.
On the front are the controls for the main functions of playback, volume up/down, pass song, play/pause… and also a button to activate the Partyboost mode. At the top there is the power button and the Bluetooth button, accompanied by the USB-C charging port that is not covered by any rubber, as if it happened on Flip 4.
An LED light informs us of the status of the battery, which gradually loses its intensity if used.
Externally it is very simple and what perhaps catches more attention apart from the charging port exposed to water or dust is IPX7 certified that even allows the bluetooth speaker to float in the water.
It is available in 6 different colors, I bought the dark blue because it is not as dirty as black and is still elegant. SOUND
QUALITY The first
thing you need to know is that this new model has a driver so the sound is mono, and not stereo as was the case in Flip 4.
The driver it carries measures 4×4 x 8 cm, is larger and the construction has improved and draws a power of 20W RMS. Frequency response is 65 Hz to 20 kHz. It has two passive radiators at each end of the speaker. This improves bass response and allows it to be configured via the JBL Connect APP.
Once we know this the sound it offers is clear and clear, with some bass that do not obscure the rest of the frequencies. This is especially noticeable in the treble, which have more detail. On the other hand, the feeling of stereo sound offered by the previous model is strange.
Partyboost mode allows us to pair Flip 5 with other identical speakers, it’s a pity that this mode is not compatible with previous JBL models. Come on, we have to go through the box yes or yes.
CONNECTIVITY AND FUNCTIONALITY
Okay, this is where JBL has gone crazy and this JBL Flip 5 has no 3.5mm minijack input or hands-free microphone to take calls from the speaker itself, or be able to contact the voice assistant. Very important things if the previous model has.
In addition, this Flip 5 is not compatible with older models of the brand. This means that it can only be paired to other Flip 5 speakers.
The evolution is observed in charging times and battery life. Charging has improved with the USB-C port (which is exposed without any cover) and charging in just 2.5 hours, half the time of the previous model.
The autonomy reaches up to 10 hours at maximum volume, and 12 hours with a volume of 70 -80%.The battery is 4800 mAh. This speaker has Bluetooth 4.2 version with a coverage range of 30 meters. I expected an upgrade to version 5.0, which saves battery use and improves the bluetooth signal.
Sincerely not worth it for what it offers. They have cut in functionality, even though they have improved battery and sound (a bit). I prefer other speakers like the Sony SRS XB21 or even the UE Boom 3. I do not recommend this speaker, sorry but I can not.
